Local Hospital Tour Information

As your due date approaches, you may find it helpful to take a hospital tour as part of your preparation for childbirth. Many local hospitals offer in-person and/or virtual tours for expectant parents.

In-person tours can be helpful for families who want to familiarize themselves with the hospital, including parking and other important details, before the big day. Virtual tours are an excellent option for those who prefer to plan ahead from the comfort of home.

What Type of Tour Does My Hospital Provide?

  • Main Line Health offers virtual tours across several of their hospitals, including Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, Paoli Hospital and Riddle Hospital. A list can be found on the Main Line Health website.
  • Chester County Hospital, part of Penn Medicine, offers in-person tours of their maternity wing.
  • The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), Penn Medicine offers virtual and in-person tours of their maternity facilities.

Childbirth Preparation at Main Line Family Education

While tours may provide a nice introduction to the logistics and layout of your hospital, Childbirth Preparation classes at MLFEd dive deeper into the essentials of preparing for your hospital stay. Labor and Delivery nurses will guide you through:

  • What to pack: From personal items to must-haves for your baby, we’ll help you prepare with a comprehensive list of items to take with you.
  • What the hospital provides: We’ll go into detail about what local hospitals typically provide for labor patients, so you can leave unnecessary items at home and pack lighter.
  • What to expect during labor and delivery: Our classes cover every stage of labor, from when to leave for the hospital to what happens after birth, including immediate skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding support.
  • What to expect postpartum: From what you can expect immediately after birth, to choosing a pediatrician and caring for yourself postpartum, we’ll give you tools to make those first days of parenthood less stressful.
